...assist the priest in the distribution of Holy Communion during Mass and take the Eucharist to homebound parishioners; and on occasion, to those in nursing facilities and hospitals within the area. Training and diocesan permission is required. An Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion should be mature in faith and be known to other parishioners as a practicing Catholic in good standing in the Catholic Church. Diocesan regulations require that Eucharistic Ministers also be over the age of 18.
When the size of the congregation or the incapacity of the bishop, priest, or deacon requires it, the celebrant may be assisted in distributing Holy Communion by other bishops, priests, or deacons. However, if such ordinary ministers of Holy Communion are not present, the priest may call upon extraordinary ministers to assist him. Such persons may include duly instituted acolytes (altar servers) or even other faithful who have been authorized for this purpose. The selection of candidates should reflect that variety and not be confined to any one age group, sex, race or social class.
Candidates are selected with approval of the pastor. The pastor then sends the names of candidates to the Director of the Diocesan Department of Worship, who gives approval and grants the faculty in the name of the Bishop. The faculty becomes effective at the time of the celebration of the liturgical rite of the Order of the Commissioning Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (Book of Blessings, Ch. 63). Unless previously withdrawn, it remains in effect until the date of expiration, which is the same for all extraordinary ministers in a given parish.
Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are commissioned by the pastor to help to distribute the Eucharist at Sunday and Holy Day Masses. Ministers are scheduled on a rotating basis.
Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion who go to the homebound are commissioned by the pastor to take the Eucharist to members of our parish who are unable to attend Sunday Mass. Ministers are scheduled on a rotating basis.
